 Text v Graphic on Adsense

Google Adsense offers advertisers and publishers the ability to place ads in text and graphic format.

Since advertisers decide to put AdSense on their website instead of banner ads, the question remains open. What's best for advertisers and what's best for publishers?

On the other hand, advertisers may think display ads are more responsive but less likely to drive sales. On the other hand, text ads can convert more, while being less visible to the consumer.

Text ads are the least intrusive of the two formats. However, does that mean display ads are better? Consumers are accustomed to advertising graphics by logging into free email accounts and using other web services. Through their use of display ads, they almost programmed themselves to ignore it. By not targeting advertisements, the consumer is accustomed to advertising for the brand that he considers less advantageous overall. This can cause the consumer to skip the display ad assuming it will be the same.

Text ads are not forced on my browser. By being less visible, some people won't see it at all, but those who see and read it are more likely to click on it. This is for several reasons, but the first is that they provide more information. In general, a person reading text on a page will not be entirely satisfied with what they are reading, and if they are viewing AdSense ads, they are more likely to read something that will end regardless of their next intention. With a display ad, it's much more of a web user's bet.

Display ads are often paid per impression. Indeed, the advertiser may try to promote its brand, rather than specifically promoting a useful service. They are therefore supposed to have lower conversion rates and with this text the advertisements are more effective in the eyes of consumers. However, if the text inside the ad is placed in a graphic format, what is more effective? Well, first of all, it can be assumed that a user will be more likely to see it, but if multiple image ads appear next to each other, they may feel overwhelmed.

Display ads are also difficult to regulate. Consider that Google allows ads to change frequently and without regulation. An advertiser may claim affiliation from the website they are advertising on and contain keywords such as "ipod" which cannot be included in a text ad. Although more regulation and quality control may apply, for example, a pornographic image could be created to appear in an advertiser's advertisements unintentionally.

Text ads also have broader market appeal because advertisers typically don't have the internal resources to create an image ad, but they do have the internal resources to write a text ad. This could mean that a larger group of advertisers find access to text ads, as text ads are less burdensome for advertisers and easier to modify.

Text ads are also cheaper for the advertiser to create, as a graphically designed ad can cost upwards of $200. By removing this fixed cost, advertisers may wish to charge a higher rate for exposure; Which is beneficial for the advertiser and the publisher.

Text advertising seems to be the advertiser's preference. They pay the CTR and only receive targeted traffic. This removes the risk for businesses that previously worried about not only seeing ads, but also getting them clicked and generating sales. Since CPC is more relevant for text ads, advertisers can gain exposure without needing a high CTR to be effective.

Big brands are willing to advertise in both forms, but text's broad market appeal makes it the inevitable winner. With the demise of Flash sites with image ads, it has become clear that text and information is the preference of site users.
